Robert Fulton was a mechanic, artist, inventor, and engineer. He worked hard to improve earlier inventions by adding his own ideas. He took the idea of the steam engine and built the first successful steamboat. He also improved waterways called canals and designed an attack. His research made traveling by boat much easier, and his work has inspired engineers today to develop their own ideas and inventions. For information on other engineers, read Mechanical Engineering, another book in the Mission: Science series. Non Fiction
